Incoming goalie change for the New Jersey Devils? Akira Schmid Loaned to AHL
Devils, Schmid, and Backup
The New Jersey Devils have loaned Swiss goaltender Akira Schmid to the AHL Utica Comets. The move comes as the Devils look to give Schmid more playing time after a difficult start to the 2023-24 season.
Schmid's Season
Schmid, 23, has played in just six games for the Devils this season, posting a 2-3-1 record with a 3.75 goals-against average and .879 save percentage. He was recalled from the Comets in early December after starter Mackenzie Blackwood suffered an injury, but he has struggled to find his form since then.
Schmid's Potential
The Devils are hoping that a stint in the AHL will help Schmid regain his confidence. He was one of the top goaltending prospects in the NHL last season, and he has shown flashes of his potential this year. If he can get back to playing at a high level, he could be a valuable asset to the Devils down the stretch.
