CNN reports two more horses have died at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, bringing the total number of fatalities this year to nine. The track's management announced the news on Saturday, May 6, 2023.

The tragic deaths have cast a pall over the Kentucky Derby, one of the most prestigious horse races in the world. Seven horses perished in the week leading up to the Derby, and two more died on Derby Day.

"It's a tragedy," said Tedi Dietrich, a groom who works with the horses at Churchill Downs. "When you see these horses die, it breaks your heart."
